Illinois Scouts Experienced High-Adventure Virtual Reality at Woodfield Mall

On Saturday, Sept. 20, more than 200 people attended the Boy Scouts of America Discovery Outpost recruitment and activity center at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Illinois.

The “High-Adventure Base Virtual Reality Experience” gave prospective Scouts and their families the opportunity to see firsthand what it is like to be a part of the Scouting program.

Disc-001Participants wore virtual reality “Oculus Rift” headsets while holding on to a mock zip line. Fans blew wind around them as the headset streamed the 360-degree footage, which adapted to their movements, transporting them high above the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, the BSA’s newest high-adventure base in West Virginia.

“This is a great example of Scouting reaching out to prospective Scouts in an innovative way,” said Stephen Medlicott, national marketing group director, Boy Scouts of America. “This virtual reality experience will highlight how Scouting gives young people the chance to participate in a wide variety of fun adventures they may not otherwise experience and showcase how Scouting makes the most of the little time parents have to make a positive impact on their children.”

900lbs of Creative, the experiential marketing company, provided the cutting-edge virtual technology and the 360-degree footage of the Summit Bechtel Reserve.

The BSA plans to offer additional virtual reality experiences for mountain biking, whitewater rafting, and rock climbing at the Discovery Outpost and elsewhere. For more information and to review the schedule of events, visit the Discovery Outpost website and Facebook page.
