Eagle Scout and space exploration leader inspires thousands of youths as Scouting America and NASA partner to build the next generation STEM workforce
GLEN JEAN, WV (July 29, 2026) – Scouting America today announced that Joel R. Montalbano, Eagle Scout, deputy associate administrator for NASA’s Human Spaceflight Mission Directorate, and one of NASA’s most accomplished human spaceflight leaders, delivered the keynote address at Leadership Heights during the 2026 Scouting America National Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve.
Montalbano, who has served in several senior leadership roles at NASA, including leading programs supporting the International Space Station and human spaceflight operations, embodies the spirit of leadership, perseverance, and service that Scouting seeks to instill in every young person. He is also an Eagle Scout, Scouting’s highest rank, and a lifelong advocate for STEM education and exploration.
His appearance highlights the growing strategic partnership between Scouting America and NASA, which is designed to inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while helping develop the skilled workforce needed to support America’s future in aerospace, innovation, and advanced technology.
“Joel Montalbano’s journey from Eagle Scout to NASA leader demonstrates the extraordinary potential that can be unlocked when young people are challenged to lead, explore, and serve,” said Roger Krone, president and CEO of Scouting America. “His career reflects the values of Scouting and the spirit of discovery that drives NASA’s mission. We are honored to welcome him to the National Jamboree and excited about the opportunities our partnership with NASA creates for Scouts across the country.”
Leadership Heights is one of the National Jamboree’s signature programs, bringing together distinguished leaders from business, government, science, technology, and public service to share insights and inspire the next generation of innovators and changemakers.
Throughout his career, Montalbano has overseen some of the nation’s most significant human spaceflight initiatives. He previously served as International Space Station Program Manager and has held leadership positions responsible for advancing NASA’s human spaceflight operations, low-Earth orbit initiatives, and international cooperation in space exploration. He is also a recipient of NASA’s Distinguished Service Medal and numerous other honors.
The partnership between NASA and Scouting America comes at a pivotal time for the nation. As NASA advances ambitious goals in space exploration and technology development, the demand for scientists, engineers, technologists, and skilled problem-solvers continues to grow. Together, NASA and Scouting America are working to expose youth to hands-on STEM experiences that spark curiosity, build critical-thinking skills, and help prepare them for careers that will shape the future.
From robotics and engineering to space science and exploration, Scouts participating in the National Jamboree will have opportunities to engage with STEM concepts that connect directly to the challenges and opportunities facing the next generation of innovators.
“America’s future depends on inspiring young people to dream big and pursue bold ideas,” said Montalbano. “By connecting Scouts with NASA’s incredible mission of exploration and discovery, we are helping young people see themselves as future engineers, scientists, astronauts, entrepreneurs, and leaders.”
The 2026 National Jamboree has brought together thousands of Scouts, volunteers, and leaders from across the nation for an unforgettable experience centered on leadership, service, outdoor adventure, and innovation. Montalbano’s keynote was one of the event’s signature moments, challenging Scouts to embrace curiosity, pursue excellence, and help write the next chapter of America’s story of exploration.
